The Path...to Discipleship
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
It is surprising how many of us struggle when trying to articulate the purpose of the church when Jesus made the purpose clear. Just in case we could not figure it out, He made it into a simple, straight-forward command. As a command from the spokesman and head of the Church we have our marching orders--we have our purpose--we have our primary directive: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations..."
The discipleship process has two main objectives: 1) Go out and proclaim the Gospel Message. We commonly call this Evangelism. 2) Teach people to observe all the things that Jesus has commanded us. These two objectives should keep us balanced as we reach out to others and at the same time we build up, train and prepare for ministry those who belong to the household of faith. This process should begin in our homes. Our children should be the place where Evangelism and Discipleship begins. If that is true, where do we begin? What should our children know concerning our faith? What are the essentials of the Gospel that everyone should know? "The Path" is an attempt to clarify the "knowledge goals" as we work at making disciples.
