Knowing and Applying God's Truth to Real Life
Matthew 5:7 (NKJV)
Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.
What truth is revealed? This is pretty straight forward; people who demonstrate the virtue of mercy in their lives will be on the receiving end of mercy. We already know that they receive mercy from God, but they also foster and receive mercy from the people around them.
What is the command, wisdom or promise? This is a promise of God’s blessing to those who practice being merciful.
What does this mean to/for me? What does it mean to be merciful? Mercy is a term that is closely related to the idea of grace. By definition, mercy means: compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm. For me it means that when it comes to balancing between the idea of mercy or judgment, I need to err on the side of mercy.
What action can/should I take? I tend to have a high code of morality and ethics that I apply to the people around me; which makes me judgmental. My natural (unmerciful) reaction is to give people what they deserve. No mercy in that reaction! God has given me grace in spite of my shortcomings, the least I can do is to strive to extend mercy to others.
As revealed by God through the Life and Message of Christ; through the wisdom of Solomon; through the letters of the Apostles; through the inspiration of God.
