Knowing and Applying God's Truth to Real Life
Matthew 5:27-30 (NKJV)
"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
What truth is revealed? Firstly, it will be shocking to many people that our Savior (Jesus Christ) understood sensuality. Jesus tells us (particularly men) that what we “see” is the gateway for the development of sensual feelings.
What is the command, wisdom or promise? Jesus gives us some very sound advice concerning how to deal with sensuality. He uses a figure of speech, called hyperbole, to make His point. “Pluck out the offending eye, cut off the offending hand.” The point Jesus is making is simple: To solve our problem with lust, we must cut off the source. Exposure to sensual materials (pornography—SI Swimsuit Issue) will lead to failure.
What does this mean to/for me? If I want to live a life that is free from the pull of lust, I must separate myself from sensual media; particularly media that is available online. If I see something sensual that captures my imagination; I must quickly look away and take control of my stray thoughts. (Singing worship songs is helpful)
What action can/should I take? Personally, I have had to take steps to limit my exposure to sensual materials. I used to subscribe to Sports Illustrated—and had Jody (my wife) intercept the Swimsuit Issue and dispose of it before it ever reached my desk. It is challenging to cut off all the sources of sensual materials in this day and age; but it is necessary if I want to walk in freedom.
As revealed by God through the Life and Message of Christ; through the wisdom of Solomon; through the letters of the Apostles; through the inspiration of God.
