Knowing and Applying God's Truth to Real Life
Matthew 5:5 (NKJV)
Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
What truth is revealed? “Gentleness” is a synonym for the word “meek.” We know that gentleness is a Fruit of the Spirit and an important Christian virtue. According to Jesus, gentle people are blessed and tend to do well on planet earth.
What is the command, wisdom or promise? This is a word for the wise. Jesus is reiterating a truth that comes from Psalm 37:11. “But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” Proverbs 15:1 tells us, “That a gentle word turns away wrath.” Here’s the secret truth about gentleness: Gentle people are easier to be around and find it easier to make forward progress in this world.
What does this mean to/for me? I need to realize that gentleness is more than a good idea; it is a Fruit of the Spirit. It is spiritual fruit that God wants to “see” growing in my life. Gentle people are more approachable. Gentle people influence others. Gentle people are the kind of people you want to be friends with. Finally, gentleness puts out the fire of anger.
What action can/should I take? I think that our culture generally thinks of gentle (meek) individuals as being weak. I have found that most gentle people tend to be resilient and amazingly strong. That is the kind of person that I want to be. So, I will be praying, “Lord, make me into a person that is approachable, full of Your wisdom and a safe harbor for others in the midst of a crisis.”
As revealed by God through the Life and Message of Christ; through the wisdom of Solomon; through the letters of the Apostles; through the inspiration of God.
